Teaching

I am currently teaching two courses at the Maastricht University:
  • "Managerial Finance and Accounting", a second year bachelor course which provides together with the first year's required finance and accounting courses the foundation in finance and accounting for International Business students at this university.
  • "Corporate Governance and Financial Stakeholders", a master course for International Business students which analyses corporate governance from the point of view of different financial stakeholders and covers topics such as engagement by institutional investors, banks as concentrated debt owners in project finance, government ownership and privatisation, stakeholder dynamics during bankruptcy.

I am also currently teaching one course at the Open Universiteit:

  • "Financieel Management", a bachelor course which in combination with "Financiele Markten" and "Risiko Management en Administrative Organisatie" constitutes the finance coursework for Business Administration students at this university.
Since 2013, I am regularly contributing to the course "Advanced Research Methods" in the MPhil Development Finance program of the University of Stellenbosch Business School.

In the past, I have also taught the following courses at the Maastricht University:

  • "International Financial Management", a third year bachelor course which focusses on international corporate finance and risk management.
  • "International Investments", a third year bachelor elective, which covers topics in the area of international portfolio investments such as: international assets pricing, market integration and segmentation, global asset allocation, currency risk, international portfolio evaluation, and emerging markets.
  • "Behavioral Finance", a master course, which investigates the financial decision making behavior of individuals and thereby extends into areas of psychology. Issues that are covered in this course include agency problems, financial market anomalies, market efficiency and the predictability of stock prices, and behavioral asset pricing and portfolio theory.
  • "Financial Derivates & Real Options", a Maastricht Summer School course.

I was involved in teaching 'Financial Management' and 'International Finance & Treasury' in the MBA program of the Maastricht University and the Haus der Technik in Essen (Germany) and currently also teach and coordinate 'Financial Management' in the Executive Master of Finance and Control and the International Executive Master of Finance and Control of the Maastricht University, formerly in cooperation with the Universiteit van Amsterdam.

As program leader, I was responsible for the Strategic Corporate Finance Specialization in the International Business master program from 2007 to 2019. I also held the post of Education Director for the International Business Economics bachelor program of the Maastricht University from 2004 to 2007.

While at the Maastricht School of Management (MSM) from 1993 to 2002, I was involved in a wide range of courses in the MBA program and in various executive programs. From 2012 to 2015, I taught the 'Portfolio Management' course in MSM's MBA - Accounting & Finance Specialization. Furthermore, I taught 'Empirical Techniques in Financial Research' at the University of Georgia (USA) in 1992 and 'International Finance' at the University of Graz (Austria) in 1996.
